Cyber Crime discussions with US Justice department and ITech lawyers
The International Technology Law Association (ITechLaw), the leading worldwide organization representing lawyers in the technology sector, today announced that its new President, Sajai Singh of India’s J. Sagar Associates, has met with senior officials in the U.S. Department of Justice and the Federal Trade Commission. The series of discussions took place in Washington, D.C. over multiple days and focused on possible avenues for collaboration between the agencies and ITechLaw.
For any collaborative activity relating to cyber crime, ITechLaw’s new Cyber Crime Committee will be the focal point within the organization. This group intends to play a leadership role globally in legislative efforts to address crimes involving the use of technology and/or the admissibility of electronic evidence.
President Singh’s first meeting included senior staff at the Computer Crime & Intellectual Property Section (CCIPS) of the Department of Justice. The broadly ranging discussion determined that ITechLaw and the Department of Justice might most easily work together in the areas of training and capacity building. Singh also met with an official of the U.S. Office of Overseas Prosecutorial Development, Assistance and Training (OPDAT), Criminal Division to discuss how ITechLaw and OPDAT might together capitalize on opportunities.
Lastly, Singh participated in far-reaching discussions at the Federal Trade Commission (FTC), with officials from the Office of International Affairs and the FTC Bureau of Consumer Protection. The FTC representatives described collaborations underway with a number of organizations where ITechLaw participation could be relevant. Specific topic areas where ITechLaw and the FTC might work together were also discussed.
« I’m grateful to the Department of Justice and FTC officials who generously gave their time for these valuable and informative conversations, which we hope are the foundation for important collaborations in the near future, » said Singh. « Our desire is for ITechLaw to be a trusted and authoritative resource – especially on global cyber crime, through our new Cyber Crime Committee, and on other issues of law and technology worldwide — and a helping hand, working together with government agencies and relevant non-profit groups. »
